Andrew Ridsdale killed while time trialling in collision with lorry on the A1 - driver pleads guilty to death by careless driving

43-year-old Andrew Ridsdale has been killed in collision with a lorry on the southbound carriageway of the A1 in Nottinghamshire.

The crash occurred at 8.55 am on a Sunday morning while Andrew was competing in a time trial promoted by the Trent Valley Road Club.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr Ridsdale was one of 44 people taking part in an open 10-mile time trial along the dual carriageway.

Nigel Drake made no plea when he appeared at Worksop Magistrates’ Court on Thursday on a charge of causing death by careless driving.

His case was sent to Nottingham Crown Court for a hearing on 14th March next year.

Nigel Drake, 43, pleaded guilty at Nottingham Crown Court to causing the death of Andrew Ridsdale by careless driving on March 18 last year.

The court was told Drake was a man of good character and references were put before Judge Michael Stokes, the recorder of Nottingham.

Drake was bailed until his sentencing on Monday, April 8.

The judge told him he was a “perfectly decent human being” and what happened was a tragedy.

Judge Stokes disqualified Drake, of Low Street, Carlton, Goole, from driving with immediate effect.

Drake was driving a HGV which hit Mr Ridsdale at 8.55am in the morning on the A1 southbound, near the end of the A634 Spital Road.

Mr Ridsdale was a member of the Epsom Cycling Club.

Drake has received a 26 week prison sentence, suspended for a year, a two year driving ban and £1,500 court costs.

CTC's view: 

Yet another death on a major road, the second on the A1 in just a few years.

Possibly the 19th cyclist to be killed in Britain in 2012.
